According to separate reports at MLSSoccer.com, the New York Red Bulls and Chicago Fire, both in the Eastern Conference, have expressed interest in gaining themselves additional Designated Players for the 2010 season.
Designated Players are players teams can sign and pay more than the team's salary cap, with the difference paid by the league.
In the newest Collective Bargaining Agreement signed this season, teams are allowed two slots for such players with the option to have a third such player at a cost of $250,000.
Red Bulls Hans Jacke said he is "getting more and more confident" they will add a third one "in the next week to 10 days" to join fellow designated stars Juan Pablo Angel and the recently-signed Thierry Henry.
Fire technical director Frank Klopas said he'd like to sign a second "and possibly even a third" such player to his roster.
Chicago announced the signing Saturday of their first one, Mexican star Nery Castillo.
