Saying he did want to be like David Beckham and split time between his home country's team of France and his new home in Major League Soccer, the New York Red Bulls, new forward and Designated Player Thierry Henry announced his retirement Thursday from France's national team.
He led the country to the 1998 FIFA World Cup and 2000 European Championship titles and scored a team-record 51 goals in 123 career international games.
Ironically, his first and last goals of his international career were scored against the same team -- South Africa.
He debuted for France October 11, 1997 in a 2-1 win and scored his last goal for France as South Africa eliminated them from 2010 World Cup play with a 2-1 victory.
