Marta scored on a 13th minute penalty kick and a 65th minute goal off a Christine Sinclair assist as the best team in Women's Professional Soccer, FC Gold Pride, edged the Washington Freedom 3-2 Sunday at Pioneer Stadium.
Solveig Gulbrandson, in her last game with the Pride before returning to her native Norway to rejoin Stabaek IF and work at an auto sales company, scored her only goal of the season in the 71st minute off Camile Abily. The team and Gulbrandson agreed to the mutual release Wednesday.
The Freedom scored late goals in the 79th minute from Lene Mykjaland off a Brittany Bock assist and in second half stoppage time from Nikki Marshall.
The Pride lead the league at 9-3-1 with 28 points, seven ahead of the expansion Philadelphia Independence (6-4-3, 21), who they host this Saturday.
Washington, at 4-4-5 with 17 points, is tied for fourth place with the Chicago Red Stars at 4-5-5. They will travel to Harvard Stadium to face the Boston Breakers next Sunday.
