Amy Rodriguez had two goals, Joanna Lohman and Holmfridur Magnusdottir added a goal each and Caroline Seger assisted on three goals as the host Philadelphia Independence defeated the defending Women's Professional Soccer champion Sky Blue FC 4-1 Saturday at the University of West Chester in West Chester, PA.
The game was the debut for new Sky Blue head coach Rick Stanton and assistant coach Jesse Kolmel, hired this week to get the defending champs back on the winning track.
The expansion Independence are in second place in the league standings at 7-5-3 with 24 points and host the Chicago Red Stars Wednesday.
Sky Blue, 5-7-3 with 18 points and in third place, host the Red Stars next Sunday at Rutgers University.
