Fire Introduce Castillo As New Designated Player

At halftime of an eventual 1-0 loss Saturday to the New England Revolution as these Major League Soccer teams competed in Group B play of the 2010 SuperLiga tournament at Toyota Park, the Chicago Fire announced they have signed Mexican forward Nery Castillo as their new Designated Player.

Castillo comes on loan from Shakhtar Donestk in the Ukraine with Chicag holding an option to make the transfer permanent.

During three seasons with Shakhtar Donestk (2007-09), he led them to a UEFA Cup championship.

Castillo has played 27 games with Mexico's national team, but was not on the roster for the recent 2010 FIFA World Cup.

He also played professionally in England for Manchester City and in the Ukraine for Dnipro Dnipropetrursk.
