DC United To Place Eddie Pope In Hall Of Tradition

Former DC United defender Eddie Pope will be inducted July 18 into the team's Hall of Tradition at halftime of their Major League Soccer game agsinst the Los Angeles Galaxy at RFK Stadium, the team announced Friday.

Pope led United to the 1996 MLS Cup and two trophies in 1998 -- the CONCACAF Champions Cup and the InterAmerican Cup.

He was first on the team over defenders in appearances (143), starts (140) and minutes played (12,228) and was second in goals scored with eight.

Pope was a six-time MLS All-Star selection, a two-time MLS Best XI member in 1997 and 1998, the league's 1997 Defender of the Year, and was named to the league's tenth anniversary All-Time Best XI.

He was traded to the New York/New Jersey MetroStars after the 2002 season and retired from the game in 2007 with current MLS champion Real Salt Lake.
