Crew Shut Out Red Bulls In Battle Of Top Two In Eastern Conference

Emilio Renteria scored a goal in the 20th minute and Brian Carroll did so in the 48th minute as the host Columbus Crew shut out the New York Red Bulls 2-0 Saturday at Crew Stadium in a battle of the top two teams in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference.

The win also snapped the Red Bulls' five-match unbeaten streak.

Newcomer Thierry Henry, who signed with the team Thursday as their new Designated Player after he retired from France's national team, was in uniform Saturday, but did not play. He is expected to debut with the team Thursday when they play an exhibition game with Tottentham Hotspur of the English Premier League, then debut in MLS play July 31 at the Houston Dynamo.

The Crew lead the Eastern Conference at 9-3-4 with 31 points, six behind the Red Bulls (8-6-2, 26) for the conference lead. Columbus will host the Dynamo next Saturday.
