For the first time since they won the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup tournament in 2002, Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew reached the semifinal round Tuesday after shutting out the Charleston Battery of the USL Second Division 3-0 at Crew Stadium.
Emilio Renteria opened the game with a 38th minute penalty kick after a foul to teammate Steven Lenhart. Lenhart scored a goal in the 70th minute off a Duncan Oughton assist and Emmanuel Ekpo connected with Eddie Gaven in the 87th minute for the eventual win.
The Crew advances to the semifinal September 1, but where and whom Columbus plays will be determined after the last quarterfinal round game is played July 21 at RFK Stadium between MLS' DC United and the Harrisburg City Islanders of USL-2.
If Harrsiburg wins, Columbus host the semfinal; if DC United wins, the Crew travels to RFK Stadium.
