Former US Women's National Team forward Brandi Chastain, a two-time member of FIFA Women's World Cup championship teams in 1991 and 1999 and of Olympic gold medal-winning teams in 1996 and 2004, announced her retirement from professional soccer Thursday at age 41, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Chastain, who played the inaugural 2009 Women's Professional Soccer season for FC Gold Pride, was released this February after starting five of ten games for the team.
WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci, in a statement posted Friday on the league's website, called Chastain "an icon and ambassador of women's soccer".
