Breakers Upset Philadelphia On Independence Day

Lauren Cheney had an unassisted goal in the 47th minute and Kelly Smith allowed Kristine Lilly to score the game-winning goal in the 85th minute as the Boston Breakers edged the host Philadelphia Independence Sunday 2-1 at John A. Farrell Stadium at the University of West Chester.

The Independence scored first in the 19th minute as Lianne Sanderson assisted Amy Rodriguez on a goal.

The Breakers, at 2-5-4 with 10 points, is in sixth place in the league standings and will host the expansion Atlanta Beat this Sunday at Harvard Stadium.

Philadelphia, at 6-4-3 with 21 points, is four points behind the league-leading FC Gold Pride (8-3-1, 25) in the standings. The two clubs will meet at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, CA July 17.
