Athletica Defeats Independence At Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park

The St. Louis Athletica edged the expansion Philadelphia Independence 2-1 in Women's Professional Soccer play Saturday at the Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in Fenton, MO.

Philadelphia's Allison Falk inadvertently gave St. Louis a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute on an own goal, then Lindsey Tarpley scored the game-winner for the Athletica unassisted in the 60th minute.

Lyndsey Patterson did score Philadelphia's only goal unassisted in the 75th minute.

Both teams are now 2-1-2 with eight points and are tied for second in the league standings, four points behind the FC Gold Pride (4-1-0, 12 points).

St. Louis welcomes the defending WPS champion Sky Blue FC to town next Sunday and the Independence travel to Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL this Saturday to play the Chicago Red Stars.
