Whitecaps Lose Hirano For Up To Six Weeks

Vancouver Whitecaps defender Takashi Hirano will be out for up to six weeks for the USSF Division II Pro League team with a mild sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee, according to the franchise Wednesday.

He suffered the injury last week in preseason training.

2010 will be Hirano's third season with the Whitecaps and has scored one goal and three assists in 58 career starts.

In 2009, he was Vancouver's Defender of the Year, starting all but one of his 28 appearances during the regular season and playing for 2,414 minutes. He also played in all four games of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship and all six playoff games in the United Soccer Leagues First Division postseason, which ended with the Montreal Impact, a fellow USSF D2 team, winning the title.

The season before, Hirano was named their Newcomer of the Year and was one of three Whitecaps named to the USL1 All-League Second Team after winning the 2008 USL1 championship.
