Major League Soccer's DC United Friday welcomed back defender Carey Talley to the franchise he began his career with in 1998, and signed defender Barry Rice, a rookie from the University of Kentucky.
Talley was acquired off waivers by United from Chivas USA, where he spent the last two seasons.
In 2009, he started all 27 games he appeared in, but had only one assist. In the previous season, Talley started 15 of the team's last 16 games over all competitions.
Talley was chosen in the 1998 MLS College Draft, starting 16 of 18 games over all competitions and played in all five MLS Cup playoff games. In 1999, he had four goals and again started every playoff game. In 2000, he had three goals and an assist and started 28 of 29 games. Finally, in 2001, he had two goals and three assists in 22 starts.
He would be traded to the Kansas City Wizards before the start of the 2002 season and he would finish in two seasons by starting 32 of 44 games played.
He would then be traded to FC Dallas (four assists in 43 games, 33 of them starts over two seasons) and defending MLS champion Real Salt Lake.
At RSL in 2006, he started all 30 regular season MLS games and had eight assists.
In 2007, he would become third on the team in games played (26), games started (25) and goals (tied with three).
Rice was a two-time Southeastern Conference Defender of the Year at Kentucky during the 2007 and 2008 seasons and was a member of the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2006. He finished his Wildcats career with 12 goals and seven assists over 78 games. He leaves Lexington as the school's sixth all-time scorer in game-winning goals and seventh in career games played.
