Red Stars Signs Free Agent M Formiga

The Chicago Red Stars of Women's Professional Soccer announced Tuesday they have signed free agent Brazilian midfielder Formiga, who played in the league's first season for FC Gold Pride.

Born Miraildes Macial Mota, Formiga was the first overall selection of the Pride in the 2008 WPS International Draft and played in 15 of 16 games in 2009, logging 1,363 minutes.

She was named to the WPS All-Star First XI, but had to withdraw from the inaugural event due to a sprained right knee.

With Chicago, Formiga will be reunited with Brazilian teammate Cristiane.

Formiga played for Brazil in the 1996 and 2000 Olympics and was on silver medal-winning team at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. She also led Brazil to the 2003 Pan American Games gold medal in soccer and was a four-time member of their team at the FIFA Women's World Cups of 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007.
