The owners of Orlando's Major League Lacrosse franchise, the Orlando Titans, announced Thursday they will own and operate a franchise in the United Soccer Leagues First Division when the league earns certification from US Soccer in 2011.
The Titans, owned by NY Empire Soccer, LLC, was known as the New York Titans before relocating to Orlando this season.
The city is already home to the Central Florida Kraze in the USL Premier Development League and previously had a second team in that league -- the Ajax Orlando Prospects -- as well as a team in the A-League (now USL1) called the Orlando Lions. Ownership of the Kraze say they will develop a partnership with the new franchise.
No announcement was made as to where the new Orlando franchise will play home games, but the Titans will be looking to secure minority investments from local businesspeople.
Teams in USL1 will be participating in the new, one-year US Soccer Federation Division II Pro League, after USL1 and the North American Soccer League failed to earn accreditation by the federation to operate as Division II leagues for the 2010 season.
