The NSC Minnesota Stars of the USSF Division II Pro League Saturday named Carl Craig as an assistant coach and defender Kevin Friedland as a player-assistant coach, and also signed defender Kyle Altman to a contract.
Craig began his coaching career in England in 1990 and came to Minnesota in 1994 to become head coach of the Edina Soccer Club. He has since coached many high school and youth soccer teams in the state. Since 1995, Craig has served as a Region 2 staff coach. He is also head coach of the boys team for the state's Olympic Development Program.
Friedland scored six goals in 115 appearances with the now-defunct Minnesota Thunder of the United Soccer Leagues First Division. He attended Southern Methodist University from 2000 to 2003 and was a Second Team All-American in 2002.
He was drafted by the Kansas City Wizards in the sixth round of the 2003 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.
Altman, who took the 2009 season off to complete his education, last played 16 games for the Thunder in 2008. He was a second round pick of the New England Revolution in the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft and was a two-time All-American at Trinity University in San Antonio.
