The 2010 Major League Soccer season will start as expected Thursday after it was announced Saturday afternoon in Washington, DC the league and its players union reached a tentative agreement on a new five-year collective bargaining agreement which takes effect Thursday and runs through December 31, 2014.
The deal is subject to approval by the league's Board of Governors and the membership of the MLS Players Union, but it is considered a done deal by both sides.
Coming to terms on the new agreement avoided a potential players strike, which would've been the league's first work stoppage in their 15-year history.
Under the new CBA, most players will be able to earn guaranteed contracts, but, in lieu of becoming free agents when contracts expire, option years are declined or a player reaches a certain age, a re-entry draft will be created to find the player a new team.
