Montero Leads Sounders To MLS Season Opener Win Over Union

Fredy Montero assisted on the first goal of the 2010 Major League Soccer season by Brad Evans in the 12th minute, then scored himself in the 42nd minute as the Seattle Sounders spoiled the debut of the expansion Philadelphia Union 2-0 Thursday at Qwest Field.

The game, seen by over 36,000 fans, was a physical contest that also saw the first ejection of the season by Union defender Toni Stahl, who earned a red card in the 40th minute for a second hard foul against Montero, forcing Philadelphia to play a man down the rest of the game.

The Sounders travel to Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ next Saturday to face the New York Red Bulls while the Union next play April 10 when they take on DC United at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia in the first of two home games before moving into their true home pitch, PPL Park in Chester, PA.
