Midfielder Federico Molinari became the first person to sign a 2010 contract with the Western Mass Pioneers of the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League Wednesday and earned himself a free gift -- the captain's armband.
Molinari began playing for the team, then in the USL Second Division, in 2003, left, then returned in 2006 and has been there ever since.
The Pioneers announced recently they would relegate themsleves to USL PDL.
In 2008, Molinari was named to the USL2 All-League Second Team and, in five seasons with Western Mass, had 16 goals and 17 assists over 87 games.
