Garber Wants New Stadium For DCU; Will Change Designated Player Rule

As parts of a wide-ranging conference call Tuesday, Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber told reporters he is tired of hearing politicians talk about giving DC United a new soccer-specific stadium but doing nothing constructive to make it happen.

Garber said the league has made plenty of commitments to the area "with no commitment in return" from politicians who say one thing and do another and, if something doesn't get soon, he will "do something about it" and allow the franchise to possibly move out.

DC United plays in 45,000-seat RFK Stadium, former home of the NFL's Washington Redskins and Major League Baseball's Washington Senators and current home of MLB's Washington Nationals.

Garber also said, according to the Toronto Sun, he will announce new provisions next week to the league's Designated Player rule, which allows MLS teams to sign one player for an unlimited amount, but are only responsible for playing that player the maximum salary allowed in the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement, with the rest of the league picking up the difference.

The rule has allowed teams like the New York Red Bulls (Juan Pablo Angel), Los Angeles Galaxy (David Beckham) and Seattle Sounders (Freddie Ljungberg) to join MLS rosters.
