Dynamo's Barrett Retires As Player, Becomes Assistant Coach

Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo announced the retirement Thursday of defender Wade Barrett and his immediate hiring as a new assistant coach for the team.

Barrett leaves the team as third best all-time in games played (140), games started (139) and minutes played (12,399).

He began as a member of the original San Jose Earthquakes, leading them to the 2001 MLS Cup title and the 2005 MLS Supporters Shield.

In 2006, the team moved to Houston and were rebranded the Dynamo. The franchise won back-to-back MLS Cup titles in 2006 and 2007 under Barrett's leadership as team captain.
