Battery Signs Zaher, Gruenewald After CCC Performances

After their performances in the recent Carolina Challenge Cup preseason tournament, the host team, the Charleston Battery of the United Soccer Leagues Second Division, announced the signings Tuesday of defender Mike Zaher and midfielder Jon Gruenewald.

Zaher, who played collegiately for UCLA, played 10 games in the 2009 Major League Soccer season for the San Jose Earthquakes. He was drafted in the third round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC, but was later traded to DC United for an undisclosed draft pick.

He also played three seasons with the USL Premier Development League -- 2005 with the Boulder Rapids Reserve and the 2006 and 2007 seasons with the San Fernando Valley Quakes.

Gruenewald, who graduated from Rollins College in Orlando, FL, had four goals and four assists in two combined seasons for the PDL's Central Florida Kraze.
