Midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco of Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire signed a one-year deal Thursday to play for Veracruz, a second division team in his home country of Mexico, once his current Fire contract ends in December, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday.
Blanco is vying to play for Mexico in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and, if he makes the roster, would miss the first three months of the 2010 MLS season.
Fire officials are confident that when mid-July comes and he can legally opt out of the rest of his deal with Veracruz, he will return to Chicago.
