Lower Seeds Win Opening Leg Games In USL1 Playoffs

The lower-seeded teams in the quartefinal brackets of the United Soccer Leagues First Division playoffs took first leg victories Thursday in the two-leg, aggregate-goal quarterfinal matchups.

At Swangard Stadium, the defending league champion Vancouver Whitecaps got a 77th minute pass from Marlon James to Randy Edwin-Bonsu for the game's only goal as the seventh-seeded team shut out the second-seeded Carolina RailHawks.

Game two moves to WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, NC Sunday.

Kenney Bertz and John Ball had goals for the sixth-seeded Rochester Rhinos in a 2-1 victory over the third-seeded Puerto Rico Islanders Thursday at Marina Auto Stadium in Rochester, NY.

Bertz scored in the 64th minute off a Tim Velten assist; Nano Short took part in Ball's goal.

Nicholas Addlery gave the Islanders an unassisted goal in the 72nd minute.

Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon, PR will host Sunday's second game.

Finally, David Testo had a 10th minute goal off a Joey Gjertsen pass and Rocco Placentino fired off the insurance goal in the 88th minute off Eduardo Sebrango as the host and fifth seed Montreal Impact shut out the fourth-seeded Charleston Battery at Saputo Stadium.

The scene shifts Sunday to Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, SC.
