Tsuyoshi Yoshitake had two goals and Scott Buete and Stephen Armstrong added goals as the Charleston Battery climbed back to the top of the United Soccer Leagues First Division standings Tuesday with a 4-1 victory over the last-place Cleveland City Stars at Blackbaud Stadium.
The Battery are now 12-4-8 with 44 points, two points ahead of the Portland Timbers (11-1-9, 42) and the Carolina RailHawks (13-5-3, 42).
Portland, though, puts up its league-record 20-game unbeaten streak on the line Wednesday when they face the Montreal Impact (7-8-5, 26, sixth place) at Saputo Stadium, then heads to Marina Auto Stadium in Rochester, NY Saturday to meet the Rochester Rhinos (9-7-5, 32, fifth place).
Carolina, meanwhile, will be at the defending league champion Vancouver Whitecaps (7-9-4, 25, tied for seventh place with the Miami FC Blues) next Tuesday.
Charleston next plays at home August 20 against the Whitecaps.
Cleveland, 2-14-7 with 13 points, got their only goal of the game on a penalty kick from Leo Gibson in the 35th minute. They will host the Minnesota Thunder August 22 at Middlefield Cheese Stadium in Bedford, OH.
