WPS Announces Draft Plans For New Teams

Women's Professional Soccer Tuesday announced the formats for how the league's two 2010 season expansion teams -- the Philadelphia Independence and the Atlanta Beat -- will fill their rosters.

On September 15, an Expansion Draft will be held where each team will select up to nine players from other WPS franchises.

Each current franchise will be able to protect 10 players on their roster, with no team able to lose more than three players from their roster. As a protected player from a team is chosen, the team losing the player can protect an additional player.

On September 22, the Independence and Beat, in order, will swap picks in the 2009 International Draft over the first 10 selections until each team has chosen five international players for their rosters.

Finally, at the 2010 WPS Draft January 15 during the annual National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention in Philadelphia, the Beat will have the first pick and the Independence the second pick in the first round of the draft, as well as another pick later in the round. After that, they will have one pick for the remaining six of seven planned rounds.
