Wizards Fire Onalfo And Kelderman; Vermes Interim Coach?

The Kansas City Wizards announced the first firing of the 2009 Major League Soccer season with the termination of head coach Curt Onalfo and assistant coach Kris Kelderman.

The Wizards are in sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings at 5-7-6 with 21 points, have lost their last four games, including a 6-0 defeat to FC Dallas in the second-worst pounding in team history.

They have also scored 21 goals in 18 games and only one in the last four games, which was the lone goal in a 1-1 draw at CommunityAmerica Ballpark July 25 to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Onalfo took over the team at the start of the 2007 season and the team made the playoffs each season he has been at the helm. Overall, in MLS play, he is 27-29-22.

Team president Robb Heineman told the Kansas City Star Monday technical director Peter Vermes will take over as interin head coach and a search for a new head coach would take place after the season ends.

However, other sites, including MLS' website, report a news conference will be held Tuesday morning at 9:45 a.m. local time to name an interin head coach.
