Timbers Add PDL Champion Player To Roster

Midfielder Rodrigo Lopez, who led the Ventura County Fusion recently to their first United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League championship over the Chicago Fire Reserves, signed a contract to play for the USL First Division-leading Portland Timbers for the rest of the season Wednesday.

He previously played for Portland as a guest in a July 25 exhibition match against Burnley FC of the English Premier League and scored a goal in the 2-2 draw.

Lopez spent 18 months in the youth academy with Mexico's Chivas de Guadalajara before joining Major League Soccer's Chivas USA at age 18, where he had one goal in eight games over a three-season span (2005-08).

He played last season in the Mexican Primera Division with Queretaro.

In 2006, he was a member of the US U-20 National Team.
