The Rochester Rhinos of the United Soccer Leagues First Division signed former Vancouver Whitecaps defender Steve Kindel to a contract and he made his debut Friday night in a 3-1 home loss at Marina Auto Stadium to the Whitecaps, who he played with for 11 seasons before being released in December 2008, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle Saturday.
Kindel was a teammate of now-Rochester head coach Darren Tilley at Vancouver in 2000 and led the Whitecaps to their 2006 and 2008 league championship titles.
He had thought he would not be playing this season after deciding to stay home and help take care of two-year-old son Benjamin after his wife prepares to give birth to a second child in September.
