John Cunliffe's unassisted goal in the 63rd minute countered an earlier header goal from Tony Donatelli from Adam Braz in the 33rd minute and the host Montreal Impact and the Carolina RailHawks played to a 1-1 draw in the first game of a two-game series between these United Soccer Leagues First Division foes Sunday at Montreal's Saputo Stadium.
Game two of the series will be Wednesday night, also in Montreal.
The RailHawks have already clinched a playoff berth and are currently 14-5-7 with 49 points and in second place in the league table, three points behind the league-leading Portland Timbers, who were the first of three teams to qualify for playoff spots. The other team is the Charleston Battery.
The Impact remain in the hunt for a playoff spot at 9-10-6 with 33 points and in sixth place.
The top seven teams in the standings earn playoff spots, with the regular season champion earning a first-round playoff bye.
