The Chicago Fire and the Ventura County Fusion were crowned conference champions Saturday in United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League playoff action.
At Valley Stadium in West Des Moines, IA, the Fire edged the expansion Cary Clarets, 2-1. to win the Eastern Conference Championship.
Andre Akpan scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute off a Chris Cutshaw assist.
Freddie Braun had an unassisted goal in the 38th minute for the Fire to give them the halftime lead. Thomas Drake would even the score for Cary in the 63rd minute on his solo effort.
Meanwhile, at Texas A&M International University's Soccer Complex in Laredo, TX, the Fusion rocked the Bradenton Academics, 6-1, to win the Western Conference Championship.
Anthony Hamilton lead the Fusion with a pair of goals and Rodrigo Lopez Alvarez had a goal and an assist in the victory. Three others -- Ivan Becarra, Daniel Barrera and Artur Aghasyan -- added single goals.
Ederson Lopes scored the first goal of the contest and the lone Bradenton tally.
The date and location for the 2009 PDL National Championship has yet to be announced.
