Mexico Extends USMNT Record There To 0-23-1

In need of a win to stay in contention for one of three guaranteed berths from CONCACAF to the 2010 FIFA World Cup field, Miguel Sabah scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute as Mexico defeated the US Men's National Team, 2-1, Wednesday in a qualifying game at Estadio Azteca.

Mexico vaulted themselves from fifth in the six-team final table to third with a 3-3-0 record and nine points.

The US is now 3-2-1 with 10 points and in second place, two points behind standings leader Costa Rica, and is now 0-23-1 in World Cup qualifying games aganist El Tri played in Mexico.

Charlies Davies scored the lone US goal in the ninth minute to silence the partisan, over 100,000-member Mexican crowd, but the fans got back into the game afer Israel Castro tied the game in the 19th minute and both teams held the tie through halftime.

The US now has a must-win game September 5 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, UT against El Salvador, if it wants to lock up a 2010 field berth.
