James, Burgess Team As Whitecaps Gore Rhinos

Marlon James scored on a 43rd minute penalty kick and was assisted by Tyler Burgess on a 60th minute goal as the defending United Soccer Leagues First Division champion Vancouver Whitecaps beat the host Rochester Rhinos Friday, 3-1, at Marina Auto Stadium.

Burgess also scored a goal in the 69th minute with help from teammate Gordon Chin.

Tiger Fitzpatrick made Rochester's lone score unassisted in the 63rd minute.

The Whitecaps are 7-7-3 with 24 points and tied for sixth place in the league standings with the Miami FC Blues (7-8-3). The top seven teams in the 11-team table advance to the playoffs.

Rochester is alone in fifth place at 8-6-5 with 29 points.

Vancouver continues their road trip Saturday at Middleboro Cheese Stadium in Bedford, OH to meet the Cleveland City Stars, then head Thursday to PGE Park to play the Portland Timbers before returning home August 8 to welcome the Charleston Battery.

Rochester hosts the Carolina RailHawks Wednesday and the Austin Aztex next Saturday.
