Home Teams Lose In PDL Playoff Doubleheaders

So much for the Des Moines Menace and the Laredo Heat winning home field advantage for the semifinals of the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League's playoffs Friday.

Cole Grassman scored in the 70th minute off a Vince Petrasso assist as the expansion Cary Clarets, 1-0, at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines, IA in the nightcap of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

In the opening game, Mark Blades, Freddie Braun and Chris Cutshaw led the Chicago Fire to a 3-0 rout of the Ocean City Barons.

The Eastern Conference Final will pit the Fire and the Clarets Saturday.

Meanwhile, at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, TX, the Bradenton Academics stunned the Heat, 3-1, in overtime in the second game of their doubleheader.

Cameron Harris scored first for Bradenton in the 20th minute, but Raul Quinones forced 30 minutes of extra play in the 57th minute with his counterstrike.

In overtime, Steven Morris (116') and Ederson Lopes (120') scored back-to-back goals to advance to the conference final.

The Ventura County Fusion stunned the expansion Kitsap Pumas, 2-1, in the opening matchup.

Rodrigo Lopez Alvarez scored the game-winning goal in the 90th minute for Ventura County.

Daniel Barrera assisted Anthony Hamilton with a 27th-minute goal to give the Fusion the lead before Max Barlow Lipset evened the game at halftime with an unassisted play.

Saturday's Western Conference final now has the Academics facing the Fusion.
