The Ventura County Fusion became the 2009 United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League chmpion by edging the Chicago Fire, 2-1, Saturday at Buena High School to become the lowest-seeded team to win the title and the first team from California to become the league's champion since the 1998 San Gabriel Valley Highlanders.
Alfonso Motagalvan scored the game-winning goal for the Fusion in the second minute of second-half injury time.
Ivan Becarra put the Fusion on the board in the ninth minute off a Rodrigo Lopez assist.
Ventura County were forced to play most of the game with 10 men, though, after midfielder Manny Guzman was ejected after a fight with Chicago midfielder Mark Blades in the 33rd minute. The game also saw Ventura's head coach and assistant coach ejected and forced to watch the game from the stands.
Andre Akpan scored Chicago's only goal in the 74th minute.
