The defending Professional Arena Soccer League champion Stockton Cougars Monday promoted player-assistant coach Antonio Sutton to player-head coach, replacing previous player-coach Bernie Lilavois, who, despite leading the team to the inaugural PASL championship, was terminated at the end of last season.
Sutton had seven goals, three assists and 18 blocks for the Cougars last season in eight regular season games. He also scored two goals in the league's North American Championship tournament semifinal victory, 10-9, in overtime against the Edmonton Drillers March 14 at Stockton Arena, then had three blocks in their 13-5 championship victory against 1790 Cincinnati.
A 12-year indoor soccer veteran, Sutton played nine seasons for franchises in California, including the Sacramento Knights, whom he led to the 1999 championship in the World Indoor Soccer League.
