Christian Gomez scored a game-tying goal in the 42nd minute of regulation play and later kicked a game-winning penalty kick as Major League Soccer's DC United became the first MLS team to play its way into a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League after a 1-1 regulation tie Tuesday at Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador against CD Luis Angel Firpo was settled with a 5-4 penalty kick shootout, giving them the series.
Chris Pontius, Danny Szetela, Ben Olsen and Marc Burch also scored goals for United in the shootout while Dennis Alas, Jorge Sanchez, Victor Merino and Manuel Salazar did so for Firpo.
In the regulation game, Leandro Franco gave Firpo the lead in the 39th minute on a penalty kick, but United countered three minutes later on a Gomez unassisted goal.
United now advances to Group B play against Toluca of Mexico, Marathon of Honduras and either San Francisco of Panama or San Juan Jabloteh of Trinidad and Tobago. San Francisco has a 2-0 lead in their series, which concludes Wednesday.
