The defending Major League Soccer champion Columbus Crew became the second league team to win a game in the CONCACAF Champions League Tuesday in a 2-0 rout over the Puerto Rico Islanders of the United Soccer Leagues First Division in an opening round Group C at Crew Stadium.
Steven Lenhart scored the game-winning goal in the 58th minute off an assist by reigning MLS Player of the Week Chad Marshall and Alejandro Moreno helped Robbie Rogers put in a goal in the 79th minute.
With the win, the Crew extended their home unbeaten streak in all competitions to 23 games.
24 teams from around the world are competing in the second annual tournament to determine the best professional team in the confederation. The top two teams in each of six groups will advance to the quarterfinal round of the tournament next year.
The other teams in Group C are Mexico's Cruz Azul and Saprissa of Costa Rica.
The Islanders are at Saprissa August 25 and the Crew travel the same day to Cruz Azul.
