The defending Major League Soccer champion Columbus Crew Wednesday signed Venezuelan forward Emilio Renteria to a contract.
Renteria recently spent the last two seasons in his country's first division with Caracas FC, where he scored a combined 16 goals and led them to two appearances in the Copa Libertadores tournament, including a run to the tournament's quarterfinal round in 2009, their farthest reach ever.
Before that, he scored 14 goals over two seasons (2005-07) with UA Maracaibo in the first division and also led them to a pair of Copa Libertadores appearances.
In the 2004-05 season, he scored 12 goals for Deportivo Italia in the first division after playing the previous three seasons (2001-04) in Spain's second division for Levante UD.
Renteria also played on his home country's U-17, U-20 and U-23 teams, totalling 19 goals, and scored three goals with the senior team.
