The defending Major League Soccer champion Columbus Crew retained the top spot in the Eastern Conference standings and extended their current winning streak to five games and their unbeaten streak at home as they shut out FC Dallas, 2-0, Saturday at Crew Stadium.
Chad Marshall and Eddie Gaven scored goals as the Crew improved to 10-3-9 with 39 points, tied for the most points in the league with the Western Conference leader Houston Dynamo (11-6-6) and now have a 20-game unbeaten regular season winning streak. If you add two games won in the 2008 MLS Cup playoffs, the streak grows to 22 games.
Columbus last lost at home to the San Jose Earthquakes June 8, 2008.
FC Dallas snapped a two-game winning streak and are now 6-10-5 with 23 points, good enough for seventh place in the Western Conference standings.
The Crew take a break from MLS play Tuesday when they host the Puerto Rico Islanders of the United Soccer Leagues First Division in a Group C game in the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League before traveling to the New York Red Bulls, holder of the worst record this season in MLS at 2-16-4 with 10 points, August 30.
Dallas is at the Red Bulls next Sunday.
