Dane Richards scored an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute as the New York Red Bulls won back-to-back Major League Soccer games for the first time this season as they shut out the defending Eastern Conference and league champion Columbus Crew, 1-0, Sunday at Giants Stadium.
The wins assure the Red Bulls that they will not have the worst single-season record in league history while Sunday's loss was the first for the Crew by a league opponent since June 20 when FC Dallas beat them, 2-1, at Pizza Hut Park.
Before returning to league play, Columbus lost their second game in Group C play in the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League tournament, 5-0, to Mexico's Cruz Azul.
The Crew are 10-4-9 with 39 points and will be off until September 13 when they take on the current Western Conference-leading Houston Dynamo at Robertson Stadium.
The Red Bulls are now 4-16-4 with 16 points, are in last place in the Eastern Conference standings, and will try for a three-game winning streak September 18 when they host the New England Revolution.
