Shannon Boxx scored the game-winning goal in second-half stoppage time on a penalty kick and the Women's Professional Soccer regular season champion Los Angeles Sol edged the host Boston Breakers, 2-1, Sunday at Harvard Stadium and denied them the last playoff berth, which was awarded to Sky Blue FC.
Kristine Lilly assisted Kelly Smith on Boston's lone goal in the 17th minute for the eventual halftime lead, but Aly Wagner connected with Marta in the 61st minute to tie the game.
The Sol end their season 12-3-5 with 41 points and will host the league's first championship game August 22 at The Home Depot Center against either Sky Blue FC, the Washington Freedom or the St. Louis Athletica in the playoffs' stepladder format.
Sky Blue and the Freedom meet at Maryland SoccerPlex this Saturday in a first round game, with the winner traveling to the Athletica's Anheuser-Busch Park August 19 for the league's Super Semifinal game. That winner faces the Sol for the league title.
The Breakers finish their debut campaign 7-9-4 with 25 points and missed a playoff berth by a mere two points.
