The Charleston Battery of the United Soccer Leagues First Division signed two members of the USL Second Division regular season champion Wilmington Hammerheads to their roster Friday before a freeze is placed on them for the rest of the season.
Goalkeeper Chris McClellan came to the Hammerheads after playing 57 games over the last two seasons with the Carolina RailHawks. In 2003, he began his professional career in USL2 with the Charlotte Eagles where, in 2005, he was named the league's Goalkeeper of the Year and the team won the league title.
Midfielder Jamie Franks, a rookie in professional soccer after winning a 2007 NCAA National Championship for Wake Forest, had a goal and an assist in 15 games with the Hammerheads. Franks was drafted in the fourth round of the 2009 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by Chivas USA, but refused to sign with them.
