The St. Louis Athletica officially clinched second place in the Women's Professional Soccer standings and will host the league's Super Semifinal playoff game August 19 after shutting out the Boston Breakers, 1-0, Saturday at Anheuser-Busch Park in Fenton, MO.
It also helped St. Louis that the FC Gold Pride pulled off an upset by beating the Washington Freedom, 3-2, Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, CA.
Amanda Cinalli fed a pass to Eniola Aluko in the 35th minute for the lone goal of the game.
St. Louis will now face the winner of the game between the third and fourth best teams in the leagues, to be played August 15 at the third-place team's home field.
The Athletica, at 9-6-3 with 30 points, close out their first season in the new league by hosting the Chicago Red Stars Wednesday in the home finale, then traveling to the Pride in the overall season finale next Sunday.
Boston clings to the fourth spot in the league standings at 7-8-4 with 25 points. They end their regular and home seasons next Sunday at Harvard when they welcome the regular season champion Los Angeles Sol, who will host the league's first championship game August 22 at The Home Depot Center.
