Red Bulls Play W Connection To Draw In CCL Preliminary Round Play

Despite not doing so well on the Major League Soccer scene this season, the New York Red Bulls began play in the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League tournament Thursday with a 2-2 draw to W Connection of Trinidad and Tobago in the first game of a two-game aggregate series in the Preliminary Round of Group D play at Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, Trinidad.

W took the early lead on a Jonathan Fana Farias goal in the 40th minute for the eventual halftime lead but the Red Bulls stormed into the lead in the second half on goals by Ernst Obster (47') and Alfredo Pacheco (60') before Hughton Hector fired the game-tying shot in the 71st minute.

Game 2 of this series will be played Wednesday at Giants Stadium.

The winner of this series will enter Group D for the Group Stage of the tournament against Pumas UNAM (Mexico), CSD Comunicaciones (Guatemala) and the winner of the other play-in series between Liberia (Costa Rica) and Real Espana (Honduras).
