USA Bid Committee Sends RFP To 37 Cities For Potential World Cup Sites

US Soccer announced Wednesday they have issued Requests For Proposals (RFP) from 45 stadiums representing 37 cities that qualify as potential host sites for FIFA World Cup games in either 2018 or 2022.

The RFP asks the cities to answer detailed questions concerning their ability to host games, including issues on security, tourism, climate, transportation and promotion, among other areas.

The US World Cup Bid Committee narrowed the list from its original start of 58 stadiums.

The 45 stadiums in question all range in seating capacity from over 45,000 to over 100,000 and one of the stadiums, Meadowlands Stadium, will not officially open until 2010.

California leads the list of considered stadiums with five, followed by Texas and Florida with four each.

FIFA recommends countries bidding for the World Cup submit the names of 12-18 stadiums with a minimum seating capacity. Cities interested in hosting the Opening Match or the Final Match must offer stadiums with a minimum seating capacity of 80,000.

FIFA will announce the sites for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups this December.
