US Soccer Sunday announced the 23-man roster that will compete at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup tournament June 14-28 in South Africa.
The Confederations Cup brings together the six regional confederation champions, of which the US is the CONCACAF champion by winning the 2008 Gold Cup, the defending FIFA World Cup champion in Italy, and the host country for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The US team left for Tshwane and Pretoria, South Africa Monday and open training camp Tuesday in advance of their first group play match June 15 against Italy. They will then play Brazil June 18 and end group play against Egypt June 21.
This is the USMNT's fourth time playing in the Confederations Cup tournament, having last played in 2003 in a group with Brazil, Turkey and Cameroon. In 1999, the team advanced to the tournament semifinals before losing to Mexico.
