DC United and the Seattle Sounders played to a wild 3-3 draw in Major League Soccer action Wednesday from Seattle's Qwest Field.
Chris Pontius opened the scoring for United in the 34th minute off a Santino Quaranta assist, but the Sounders knotted the contest at 1-1 four minutes later as James Riley and Brad Evans teamed on an Osvaldo Alonso goal.
In the first of two mistake goals of the night, United's Marc Burch gave Seattle the halftime lead at 2-1, then, in the 57th minute, Fredy Montero put the Sounders up, 3-1, on an unassisted play.
Christian Gomez attempted to get DC back in the game with an unassisted goal four minutes later to be down 3-2, but Seattle's Tyrone Marshall headed the ball into his own net with three minutes left to play to force the tie.
United remains the leader in the Eastern Conference with a 5-2-8 record and 23 points, two points ahead of the Chicago Fire (5-3-6, 21) and four ahead of the Kansas City Wizards (5-5-4), defending MLS champion Columbus Crew (4-2-7) and Toronto FC (5-5-4), all with 19 points. DC travels Saturday to Dick's Sporting Goods Park to face the Colorado Rapids.
Seattle, 5-3-6 with 21 points, is in sole possession of third place in the Western Conference standings, six behind the co-leading Houston Dynamo (8-2-3) and Chivas USA (8-4-3) at 27. The Sounders are at the New York Red Bulls Saturday.
