United Front Puts DC In Front In Eastern Conference

Christian Gomez's game-winning unassisted goal in the 41st minute stood up and DC United took over first place in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference with a 2-1 victory Saturday at RFK Stadium against the cooling-off Chicago Fire.

United is now 5-2-7 with 22 points, just one ahead of the Fire, in second at 5-3-6 and 21 points.

Jaime Moreno made a penalty kick in the 24th minute for United, but Marco Pappa, with assists from Tim Ward and John Thorrington, leveled the score in the 33rd minute.

United hits the road for their next two games -- to Qwest Field Thursday to meet the Seattle Sounders and to Dick's Sporting Goods Park against the Colorado Rapids.

The Fire plays the Rapids on the road July 4.
