Toronto FC To Host River Plate For Carlsberg Cup

Major League Soccer's Toronto FC announced Saturday they will host Club Atletico River Plate of Argentina in the annual Carlsberg Cup game July 22 at BMO Field.

This will be the fifth international team they have hosted at BMO and the second Argentinian team to play for the cup, following Independente in 2008.

In 2007, Toronto hosted Portugal's Benfica and England's Aston Villa for the cup and, in 2008, they welcomed Mexico's Pachuca.

Known as Los Milionaires, River Plate was founded in 1901 and is currently ranked in the all-time World Soccer Rankings and has 33 titles in its history. They have been ranked six times as the number one team, the last time coming in October 1993, and has been the only team from Argentina to be a world number one for a full season in 1997-98.

In 1986, the country won the FIFA World Cup and River Plate claimed the country's title, the Copa Liberadores championship, the InterAmerican Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.

In 2008, River Plate won Argentina's Clausura championship for the first time in four years.
